Hurricane News

6/19 - Hurricanes finish up the season in Toronto 2-1 - The Hurricanes were scheduled to play in a 12 team, 4 division tier where the division winners all advanced.  The Canes first opponent was DC Hockey OT.  The OT team only had 7 skaters but were very talented.  After going scoreless for the first period, the Canes struck against a tired OT team in the 2nd.  The Canes went on to win 6-3 after OT didn't have the gas to keep up for the whole game.  Saturday brought us the Chicago Wildcats.  We had lost our last two Saturday AM games, too much Friday night perhaps.  The Wildcats went up 2-0 after the first and it looked like we were set to lose three in a row on Sat AM in Toronto.  The Canes came back to score 4 in the 2nd but the Wildcats got the last two and we headed towards the 3rd, all tied up at 4.  The streak of losing was broken as the Canes scored 3 in the 3rd to win 7-4.  The way the tier was set up, the winner of our next game was moving onto Sunday and the loser was heading home.  We played the NY Wranglers last year and won a close one 4-3.  The 2010 version of the Wranglers was improved over the '09 version and were tough defensively having only allowed 1 goal in the previous two games.  We skated our butts off but after two periods, the Wranglers held a 2-0 advantage (partially thanks to some crappy officiating who did not witness a goal).  We were able to get on the board and make it 2-1 but they continued to shut our offense down and eventually scored and empty netter and went onto win 3-1.  That game was Rob's first lose in Toronto, bringing his record to 7-1 in Toronto and 12-1 in the playoffs overall.  The Wranglers ended up losing the championship game to the NJ Landsharks.  The fall season awaits.

5/2 - Practices scheduled - 5/24, 6/1, 6/6 and 6/8

4/21 - Canes are heading to Toronto!!!! - Having beat the Ice Barons 5-1 in their first playoff game, the two teams squared off for an encore.  What we got was an instant classic, destined to be played on ESPN 12.  The two teams skated up and down firing off 41 shots in regulation only to see each goalie stop them all.  It looked like we might be heading to our first ever shoot out but instead, we got an OT winner in the opening minute of overtime by Jeff McCandless.  The game was a hard fought game that saw great play by each team.  Congrats on a fine season in Cleveland, now on to the League Championships in Toronto.

4/6 - Canes await playoff foe - The Hurricanes split their last two games, ending the unbeaten streak at 16.  We now await the winner of the Ice Barons and Jets game for our playoff opener.

3/21 - Canes keep rolling - Canes took on the Ice Barons on 3/21 and the Jets on 3/17.  They won 7-4 and 6-0 respectively, having not lost in 16 in a row.  Next up, the Jets on 3/28

3/7 - Canes clinch the #1 playoff spot with 6-2 win over the Jets - The Canes are now unbeaten in 14 in a row as they beat the Jets 6-2 and clinched a first round bye in the playoffs.

3/1 - Canes cruise to a 9-1 win over the Piranhas - extending the unbeaten streak to 13, the Canes thrashed the Piranhas

2/26 - Canes play crappy game, tie the Ice Barons 3-3 - The Canes turned in a ho hum performance and ended up tying the Ice Barons 3-3.

2/22 - Canes win a sloppy gm for 11th in a row - Having not played for a few week was evident as the Canes took on the Jets in a sloppy gm.  Having given up 6 goals total in their previous 6 gms, the Canes gave up 5 in a 9 to 5 win over the Jets.  Next up the Ice Barons on 2/25

2/9 - Canes win 10th in a row - The Canes faced off against the division 3 Stampede and amped their game up a notch.  The teams exchanged goals in the first and the shots were pretty even.  The 2nd saw a PP goal to put the Canes up 2-1.  A 3rd period goal gave the Canes a little breathing room and the team extended their winning streak to 10 in a row.  It is starting to smell a little like '05.

2/1 - Canes extend streak to 9 games in a row - The Canes took on the Piranhas in games 13 of our season.  The games typically are low scoring with the Piranhas and the first period saw only one goal go up as the Canes led 1-0.  The 2nd saw 3 more goals go in, all for the Canes to take a 4-0 lead into the 3rd period.  The flood gates opened and the Canes potted 5 more, unfortunately the shutout was lost in the 3rd.  Next up, the Stampede.

1/25 - Canes blank the Ice Barons to extend the winning streak to 8 - Based on the 20 some penalties that were called the last time the two teams hooked up, anarchy was on the menu as the Canes squared off  against the Ice Barons.  Instead, peace and love dominated as the Canes earned their first shutout of the year, winning 3-0.

1/21 - Canes streak now at 7 games - The Canes took on the Jets in a battle for first place at the mid-way point.  The Canes went up late in the first, but the Jets had the answer 8 seconds after we scored.  In the waning seconds of the period Jeff scored his second of the game, this time a shortie and the Canes were up 2-1.  The 2nd saw a few shots by both teams and no goals.  The 3rd saw a Jets goal midway through the period but Anthony powered his way into the Jets zone and got the game winner with a little over 3 minutes left in the game.  Next up, the Ice Barons on 1/25.

1/10 - Canes extend winning streak to 6 games - The Canes took on the pesky Piranhas and in normal fashion, the game was a defensive battle.  The first period would come and go without any goals scored.  The second saw the Canes pot two but the Piranhas came back and scored one late in the period.  The 3rd period would see the Canes notch two more to secure the 4-1 victory.

1/4 - Canes begin a new year with an old tradition, winning - The Canes took on the Blast for the first game in 2010 and routed the Blast, scoring 3 goals in each period and only giving up a fluke goal to prevail 9-1.  The victory briefly put the Canes in first in the division, however the Jets moved back into first with an overtime win over the Ice Barons.  Next up the Piranhas on 1/7.

12/18 - Canes enter the holiday break with a 4 game winning streak - The Canes looked to even up the season series against the Ice Barons in the last game in '09.  The Ice Barons handily beat the Canes earlier 5-2.  It was the Canes going up early, scoring 3 goals in the first.  Another was added in the second.  The Ice Barons would not go away and scored 2 goals in the 3rd to make it a 4-2 win for the Canes.  DC made his debut for the season and helped the Canes extend the winning streak to 4.  The Canes also set a record of 12 minors in the game, having spent the 2nd half of the game in the box.

12/14 - Canes extend win streak to 3 - The Canes looked to avenge an early season loss to the Jets and inch a little closer to first place.  The first period came and went with very few scoring chances and no goals on either side.  The 2nd saw a mini-barrage as each team potted 2 goals each.  The 3rd would be continue to be a struggle as the Jets came often, but each time, Matt shut them down.  Unfortunately, no goals got in and we would head to OT.  The tide changed as the Canes kept the play in the Jets zone and eventually won, 3-2.  One more game before the holiday break with the Ice Barons on Thursday the 17th.

12/6 - Canes top pesky Piranhas 3-2 - The Canes and the Piranhas squared off in what has become a pretty close battle of late.  The Canes went up early in the 1st but a few minutes later, the Piranhas knotted it, leaving it as 1-1 tie after one period.  The 2nd saw neither team score and we entered the 3rd all tied 1-1.  Jeff M score just into the 3rd to put us up 2-1, the score it would stay till just over a minute left in the period.  Nick hit Vlad with a nice pass and the game was put away with the Canes winning 3-1.  Rob played a great game, saving 20 of 21 shots.

11/23 - Canes snap losing streak, 8-2 over the Blast - The Canes had an early goal feast as they cruised to an 8-2 victory over the Blast, posting a 6 goal first and then putting it in cruise.  Happy Thanksgiving.

11/20 - Canes extend losing streak - The Ice Barons made their mark and extended the Canes losing streak to two games as they won easily 5-2.

11/15 - Canes get thumped by the Jets - In an early season battle for first, the Canes came up short versus the Jets, losing 5-2.  The took advantage of multiple mistakes by the Canes and didnt let up as they proved the better team.  The Canes look to redeem themselves versus the Ice Barons on Monday the 16th.

11/2 - Canes overcome a three goal deficit and win in OT versus the Piranhas - The Canes opened against the Piranhas in most uninspiring fashion and soon found themselves down 3-0 in the 2nd.  Newcomer Jeff McCandless finally got the Canes on the board and we started the 3rd trailing 3-1.  Jeff added one and then Paul added another and we finally had the score tied midway through the 3rd.  A shorthanded goal by Andrew put us up 4-3.  With victory within our grasps the Piranhas tied it up 4 all with 18 seconds left.  OT came and went in 7 seconds as Jeff scored and completed his first Hurricane hat trick.  Next up, an early battle for first against the Jets.

10/25 - Canes open the season on a winning note - The Canes took to the ice versus the Blast in the opener for the 2009-10 season.  The game would start slow as the Canes got used to some new teammates and a new look Blast.  Ant opened the scoring for the year as he deflected a shot in from Pau;  The first would end with the Canes up 1-0 while outshooting the Blast 8 zip.  The second saw two more goals and a 3 nothing lead took them to the third.  Ant potted his 2nd but unfortunately the Blast scored and ruined Rob's shutout bid.  The final score was 6-1.  Next up, the Piranhas.

10/25 - Canes have one open slot - The Canes are looking for one more player to complete their roster.  If you have someone that will fit on our team, please let me know.
